Citizenship in Heaven

Citizenship in Heaven

By Pastor Ted R. House

Philippians 3:20-21 says: "For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself." Here is a little pep talk to all Christians reading this article. The Bible says in Philippians 20 that our conversation is in Heaven. We have a bright, victorious future because we are heavenly people! It is good for us to be reminded of that. While we are living in this old sinful world, sometimes it can be hard to remember that things will not always be this way. We put our tent stakes way too deep into this world! Let us be reminded that we are on the winning side!

Our future is victorious because we have a home in Heaven! The word “conversation” in the KJV Bible is an old English word and it has more than one meaning depending on the context is which it is used. Philippians 1:27 says: "Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs...". In this context, the word “conversation” means our manner of life which includes our conversations and the way we behave. However, in Philippians 3:20, the word “conversation” is talking about our home, our citizenship! Notice that it says: "For our conversation is in heaven...". It does not say “will be in heaven”. If you have ever traveled abroad, inevitably someone will ask where you are from and you will say “America”. Why? Because that is where you have your citizenship. Where we are from should match our conversation. Our citizenship has already been established; it is in Heaven! We have a dual citizenship, the good old USA and Gloryland! It does not get any better than that!

Our future is victorious because of our soon coming Saviour! The last part of Philippians 3:20 says: "...from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ." Are you looking forward to seeing your Saviour? I sure am! Jesus promised that He is coming again. In John 14:3, He said: "...I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also." We are expecting Him. In Acts 1:11, when Jesus ascended back to the Father, there were two men, which we know were angels, who told Jesus’ followers: "...Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven." Titus 2:12 says: "Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;" Why? Because we are citizens of Heaven. Philippians 2:13: "Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ". Not only that, Jesus is coming back to get us! There is still more. Philippians 3:21 tells us: "Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body..." Now that is something to shout about! When Jesus comes, He is going to change our bodies!

It will not be a new one or a different one. It will be our own body, but it will be changed to a glorious body! Even if our body has turned to dust or was eaten by fish in the sea, it will be put back together! It will not be limited by time, space, or matter! Our bodies will be like Jesus' body after He resurrected. He could walk through walls, but He was still able to eat and digest a meal, and yet, He told Thomas: “Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands...". He still has the nail prints in His hands. He has the same body. Yes, our future is definitely a victorious one! A home in Heaven and a glorified body
